Learning Beyond Worksheets
By Tonya Kipe, Founder & Executive Director of Kipe Academy
Let's be honest. Worksheets have their place. They can provide practice, reinforce a skill, and give teachers useful information. But worksheets alone don't prepare children for life.
Life asks us to solve problems. Work with others. Communicate ideas. Adapt when something doesn't go according to plan. That's why you'll often see our students doing much more than filling in blanks.
They're building. Creating. Designing. Testing ideas. Presenting projects. Asking questions. Reflecting on what they've learned.
Sometimes learning gets a little messy. Sometimes the first attempt doesn't work. Sometimes students have to rethink their ideas and try again. I actually love those moments. That's where perseverance grows.
At Kipe Academy, we want children to understand concepts—not simply memorize them long enough to pass a test.
When students create something with their own hands, explain it to someone else, or connect it to the real world, the learning sticks. The worksheet might be forgotten next week. The experience often isn't.
