What Is a Microschool?
By Tonya Kipe, Founder & Executive Director of Kipe Academy
If someone had asked me a few years ago what a microschool was, I probably would have struggled to explain it. Today, I have the privilege of leading one every day, and I've learned that a microschool isn't defined by the size of the building or the number of students. It's defined by relationships.
At Kipe Academy, we believe children learn best when they are known. When a teacher truly understands a child's strengths, challenges, interests, and personality, learning becomes personal instead of one-size-fits-all.
People often ask if a microschool is just another name for homeschooling or private school. The truth is, it's a little different. We offer the structure, consistency, and community of a school while keeping the flexibility and individualized attention that many families appreciate about homeschooling.
Our students learn in small groups. They work together, solve problems, build friendships, and participate in hands-on experiences that connect learning to the real world. You'll find students creating, experimenting, leading discussions, and asking questions—not simply completing worksheets because they're on page 42.
One of my favorite parts of a microschool is that children aren't just another face in the crowd. We celebrate their victories, help them through challenges, and watch them grow into confident learners and leaders.
Every microschool is unique, but at Kipe Academy our mission is simple: to inspire and empower every child to become a confident learner, compassionate leader, and lifelong problem solver.
For families looking for something different, a microschool isn't about doing school differently just to be different. It's about creating an environment where children can truly thrive.
